The B2B Online Boom: Why Companies Buy on the Internet
The Italian digital B2B market is worth 278 billion euros. Discover why 61% of companies already use B2B e-commerce and how not to fall behind your competitors.
There is a prejudice that dies hard in the world of Italian business: e-commerce is a consumer thing. It might be fine for selling shoes or books, but when it comes to industrial supplies, components, raw materials... there you need the sales rep, the handshake, the negotiation.
Except that the world has already moved on. And considerably.
The numbers speak for themselves
According to the B2B Digital Commerce Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, in 2024 the value of B2B orders handled digitally in Italy reached 278 billion euros, up 5% on the previous year. Globally, the B2B e-commerce market hit 32.8 trillion dollars in 2025, and forecasts indicate it will reach 61.9 trillion by 2030.
We are not talking about an emerging trend. We are talking about a transformation already under way that is reshaping the way companies do business with one another.
The B2B buyer has changed (and perhaps you haven't noticed)
Here is the point many entrepreneurs struggle to accept: the person buying on behalf of a company is the same person who, at home, orders on Amazon, books trips online and compares prices with their smartphone. According to Gartner, 80% of B2B sales interactions now take place through digital channels.
The corporate buyer of 2026 expects the same smooth experience they find as a consumer: catalogues available 24/7, transparent prices, fast ordering, accessible purchase history. When they do not find these things, they simply switch supplier.
Italy: a glass half full (or half empty)
The Italian figures tell a story of light and shade. On the one hand, according to the Algoritma report, 61% of B2B companies with revenue above 2 million euros are already active in e-commerce, generating on average 11% of their revenue through digital channels.
On the other, the value of digital transactions represents only 22% of total B2B trade. There is still enormous untapped potential.
But the most worrying figure concerns maturity: a third of large Italian companies are still not fully aware of the value of a customer-oriented approach. Only 46% have a CRM to manage commercial relationships in a structured way. And just 16% have developed proprietary digital channels such as B2B portals or e-shops.
What those who stand still risk
The question every entrepreneur should ask is not "is it worth investing in digital B2B?" but "what happens if I don't?".
Loss of existing customers. Your long-standing customers are already buying online from someone else when you are not available. That 22% of digital transactions is growing, and suppliers who fail to adapt are progressively cut out.
Higher operating costs. Handling orders by phone, email and fax (yes, some people still use it) costs enormously more than automating the process. Every manual order means sales-rep time, transcription errors, delays.
No visibility over the data. Without digital tools, you don't really know who your best customers are, what they buy, when they buy, why they stop buying. You are flying blind.
Impossibility of scaling. A traditional sales team has physical limits. An e-commerce platform can handle thousands of customers at once, even at night, even at weekends.
Where to start
You don't need to overturn everything overnight. The digital B2B transformation can be gradual, but it has to start. Here are three concrete steps:
Digitise the catalogue. Before even selling online, make your products browsable. Complete data sheets, quality images, up-to-date availability. It is the prerequisite for everything else.
Implement a CRM. If you don't know who your customers are and what they do, you can't serve them better. A Customer Relationship Management system is not a luxury, it is a necessity.
Create a customer portal. Even a simple one, even just to view orders and invoices. It is the first step towards true e-commerce, and your customers will appreciate it.
The train is passing
The Italian digital B2B market will keep growing, that much is certain. The question is: will your company be among those that lead the change or among those that endure it?
The Politecnico di Milano data show that the companies most advanced in B2B digital commerce are reaping the rewards of the investments they made in previous years. Those who start today still have time to catch up. Those who keep waiting risk finding the gap impossible to close.
Digital B2B is not the future. It is the present. And the present does not wait.
